Battery East Vista, Presidio Coastal Trail bridge now open

If you haven’t recently visited the parklands nestled around the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, bundle up (bring a rain jacket just in case!) and come on out this winter. Two striking new features were finished this fall, and they’re ready for you and your holiday guests to explore.

The former “bark chip” parking lot has been paved, equipped with bench seating, and reopened—providing access to the dramatic new Battery East vista point. Made possible through the generosity of the Tiffany & Co. Foundation, this new landmark presents dramatic views of the Golden Gate and the City by the Bay.

West of the Bridge toll plaza, the pedestrian/bike bridge over the historic batteries is now open. This ADA-accessible segment of the Coastal Trail provides a seamless transition into the Presidio for cyclists coming south off the Golden Gate Bridge—as well as a new perspective on the batteries. Also, the nearby Merchant Road parking lot has been paved, and safety fences and native plant vegetation have been added as well.

While you’re in the area, be sure to pick up some unique holiday gifts at the Bridge Welcome Center (formerly the Bridge Pavilion)—and warm up with a piping-hot bowl of clam chowder at the Roundhouse Café.
