Step Wilson began working with raptors as a volunteer bander at the GGRO in 1995. After seven autumns, he moved to Colorado and monitored raptor breeding, migration, and wintering sites throughout the Rocky Mountain Flyway and Great Lakes. He also studied raptors through counting and banding efforts in Italy, Israel, Mexico, and Canada. Step’s main interest is identifying raptor use of landscapes through observation, banding, and telemetry in order to focus conservation efforts on important use areas.
As GGRO’s Hawkwatch Manager Step works with 200 community science hawkwatchers to collect migration data, with educators, biologist, and park visitors to inform the public, and with a dedicated team of radio telemetry volunteers to study the detailed movement of raptors passing through the GGNRA.
