We are looking for a Volunteer Programs Intern that is excited to work with a broad range of audiences and engage individuals and groups in the Golden Gate National Parks through a variety of volunteer opportunities.

The Volunteer Programs Department at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy works collaboratively with the National Park Service and the Presidio Trust to engage and educate our community through parkwide volunteer programs, focusing on our regularly scheduled drop-in programs, group opportunities and special events.  The volunteer opportunities coordinated through the Parks Conservancy primarily support our park conservation efforts, including habitat restoration, native plant nurseries, trails and grounds maintenance, landscaping and gardening, and cultural resource preservation.

Position Overview

The Volunteer Programs Intern will primarily focus on coordination of individuals and small size groups with our park-wide volunteer programs as well as outreach and recruitment. He/she will learn to successfully lead volunteer programs and events, as well as manage the behind the scenes aspects of project planning and preparation. The intern will have opportunities for personal growth and development such as attending classes, trainings, and networking.


• Work in cooperation with our Program Managers in all aspects of our programs, including, but not limited to, individual and group volunteer placement, logistics, communication and documentation, facilitation of necessary resources, identifying site needs, etc.
• Coordinate and communicate effectively by phone and email with volunteers and parkwide volunteer program managers.
• Assist with organizing and preparing for special events, field projects, volunteer fairs, ongoing programs, and Park Academy classes.
• Serve as on-the-ground program support and leadership assistance to program managers.
• Collaborate with the program managers to coordinate parkwide intern swap events.
• Support data management, record-keeping systems, program reporting, and website updates.
• Attend department and program-related meetings and projects.


• Gain volunteer management experience at a highly regarded non-profit organization with a model partnership with two Federal agencies.
• Personal/professional development days to pursue an interest, including training and education opportunities in various departments within the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. 
• Opportunity to attend Park Academy Classes on a variety of topics including CPR/First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, park orientation and history, flora and fauna, program and field techniques, and much more!
• Enjoy and learn about the history, scenery, wildlife and cultural resources of a spectacular National Park.
• Work with staff and volunteers from diverse backgrounds that share a common interest in preserving and protecting our natural lands while building community.
• $30/day stipend with dorm-style housing*-- or -- $55/day stipend without housing.
*to be eligible for housing, the intern’s permanent residence must be more than 50 miles from San Francisco.

• Must be competent in Word, Excel and Power Point. Experience with database operations a plus.
• Strong multitasking skills and ability to juggle several projects at once.
• High School Diploma and current driver’s license with good driving record required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments

• This is an office based position with a couple of outdoor project days a month. Must be willing to work at a desk and computer for up to 8 hours and work outside in various weather conditions.
• Ability to lift, carry and position objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
