Habitat Restoration Team

Sundays, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM

The Habitat Restoration Team (HRT) was established in 1988. HRT's goal is to engage community members in the management and enhancement of the Golden Gate National Parks. Volunteers and staff meet at different scenic locations each week to restore native habitat throughout the park. Come out and explore beautiful areas while assisting in invasive plant removal, outplanting of native plants (winter season), and seed collection.

Register here. Drop-in individuals are welcome, however, our office is closed Friday and Saturday so if you need more information, please contact us in advance. Group programs are available. Schedule a private program for groups with 10 or more volunteers.

Age/Skills/What to Bring
Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. With young volunteers, adult chaperones are encouraged. No experience necessary. Training will be provided. Fulfills community service requirements. Tools, snacks, and beverages will be provided. Bring the appropriate waiver forms (see below). Please wear clothes that can get dirty, long pants, close-toed shoes, layers for changing weather, and rain gear if necessary. Also, bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen.

JANUARY 3 – STINSON GULCH, Bolinas Lagoon. Meet at Willow Camp Trailhead.
Oaks and buckeyes you planted at the old orchard are thriving! We’ll plant natives and pull broom to restore this woodland watershed and transform an old homestead into healthy habitat.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/ Stinson Beach/ Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) through Stinson Beach town and continue 1.5 miles north with Bolinas Lagoon on your left. Right before you come to the Stinson schoolhouse, look for the Stinson Gulch trailhead to your right and turn into the road.

JANUARY 10 – TAM FIRE SITE along Coyote Creek. Meet at Eastwood Park.
We’re planting native shrubs and trees and pulling broom to restore this ridge to oak woodlands. Twelve acres of Eucalyptus burned here in 2004. Come assist with the transformation!
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) past 7-11 and bear left onto Northern Avenue. Turn left at the T-intersection and continue on Northern Avenue which veers left at the Y. Turn right on Eastwood Way past the tennis courts and park. Look for the steep gravel road to the park gate.

JANUARY 17 – STINSON TERRACE, Bolinas Lagoon. Meet at Avenida Farralones.
This newer restoration site was once an irrigated agricultural field. Great views of the lagoon and Ocean will reward us as we weed and plant! We’ll plant lots of natives to transform this oblong spurge infested site back to wildlife habitat.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) to Stinson Beach town. Turn right at the stop sign onto Calle Del Mar. Turn right on Buena Vista Avenue (one-way). Turn left onto Laurel Avenue (one-way). Turn left onto Belvedere. Turn right onto Avenida Farralones and continue to the end. Meet at the park gate at the end of a short cul-de-sac.

JANUARY 24 – TAM FIRE SITE along Coyote Creek. Meet at Eastwood Park.
We’ll finish planting native shrubs and trees into this recovering ridge, transforming it back to native woodlands. Come enjoy the views and observe the progress made since 2006!

JANUARY 31 – STINSON GULCH, Bolinas Lagoon. Meet at Willow Camp Trailhead.
We’ll finish planting natives among old orchards and homesteads, as well as rove the creek side to pull broom and veldt grass out of habitat that supports endangered Steelhead trout!
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/ Stinson Beach/ Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) through Stinson Beach town and continue 1.5 miles north with Bolinas Lagoon on your left. Right before you come to the Stinson schoolhouse, look for the Stinson Gulch trailhead to your right and turn into the road.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6 - MUIR WOODS EARTH DAY, Redwood Creek. Meet at Annex Parking lot.

Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow to Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) west following the signs to Muir woods. Turn right onto Panoramic Hwy, go north 1 mile and turn left onto Muir Woods Road. Proceed downhill. Pass the main entrance into the woods and make the next right into the Annex parking lot.

FEBRUARY 7 - CAMP BICENTENNIAL near Point Bonita, Marin Headlands. Meet at parking lot leading to campground.
Great progress has been made here in removing ice plant from areas surrounding the campground. Join us to pull ice plant and finish planting the site with more native plants!
Directions from Marin: Head south on Hwy-101 to the second Sausalito Exit before the Golden Gate Bridge. Make a right at the off ramp and go under the overpass. Take the first left to the Marin Headlands onto Bunker Road. Continue through the 5 minute tunnel on Bunker Road for approximately 2 miles. Turn left onto Field Road passing the Visitor Center and Nike Missle Site. Turn left onto a short road connecting to a one-way road just past the stop sign. Stay left and park in the small dirt lot next to the gate that leads down to the campground.
Directions from San Francisco: Head north on Hwy-101 across the Golden Gate Bridge and take the Alexander Avenue Exit. Take the first left to the Marin Headlands onto Bunker Road. Continue through the 5 minute tunnel on Bunker Road for approximately 2 miles. Turn left onto Field Road passing the Visitor Center and Nike Missle Site. Turn left onto a short road connecting to a one-way road just past the stop sign. Stay left and park in the small dirt lot next to the gate that leads down to the campground.

FEBRUARY 14 - DIPSEA KNOLL, Stinson Beach Area. Meet at Dipsea Trailhead near Hwy-1 on Panoramic highway.
There is still time to remove big cotoneaster shrubs and no shortage of French broom. Rovers are needed to hike the Dipsea trail and seek out cape-ivy and veldt grass from acres of restored creek side habitat!
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 12.1 miles. Before the Stinson Beach town, take a right at the Panoramic Highway and park on the left side of the road at the Dipsea Trailhead.

FEBRUARY 21- HOMESTEAD VALLEY, Four Corners, Mount Tamalpais. Meet at ranch gate on Panoramic highway.
We’ve made great progress in rolling back the broom, cape ivy, pine, and cotoneaster invasion in this spectacular area! Join us to pull more.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 3.4 miles. Veer to the right onto Panoramic Highway going towards Muir Woods. Continue for 0.4 miles and park on the shoulder at the next intersection known as “Four Corners.”

FEBRUARY 28 - COYOTE RIDGE, TENNESSEE VALLEY. Meet at the end of Countyview Road.
We’ll rove pulling broom, cotoneaster, and pines from the beautiful grasslands and forest edges above Tennessee Valley.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 0.5 miles and turn left at Tennessee Valley Road. Continue for 0.4 miles and turn right on Enterprise Concourse. Go straight through the next intersection and continue ahead up the steep hill to where the road (now called Countyview Drive) dead-ends at a chain link gate. Park at the dead-end near the gate.

MARCH 7 - WHITE GATE, Stinson Beach Area. Meet at upper Dipsea trailhead on Panoramic highway.
We will be covering a lot of acres today, pulling helichrysum, French broom, and other non-natives from some of the finest grasslands in the park thanks to HRT’s good work! Wildflowers should be blooming too!
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 3.4 miles. Veer to the right onto Panoramic Highway going towards Muir Woods. Stay on Panoramic Highway and continue around the mountain. After 4 miles you will pass the Pan Toll Ranger Station and proceed downhill. Meet at the Dipsea trail crossing where it heads out onto the knoll towards Stinson. There is a gate on either side of the highway at the Dipsea Trailhead.
 
MARCH 14 – MARINCELLO TRAIL, Marin Headlands. Meet at Tennessee Valley parking lot.
We’ll caravan in and follow-up on broom along the top of the ridge. We will cut and saw away the Portuguese broom and small pines from this grand entrance to the city in the Headlands that was never built!
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 0.5 miles and turn left onto Tennessee Valley Road. Continue for 1.6 miles to the parking lot at the end of the road.

MARCH 21 - CAPEHART QUARRY & FORT BARRY, Marin Headlands. Meet at the intersection of Bunker and McCullough Road.
Fantastic progress has been achieved in the last 9 years! Come pull small broom to prevent seed set for one more season at the quarry, then we will move to Fort Barry to make sure broom and cape-ivy don’t make a comeback!

MARCH 28 – MORNING SUN & SCA TRAIL. Meet at theh west side of the freeway commuter lot at the Spencer Avenue exit.
We will rove far and wide to remove exotics from endangered mission blue butterfly habitat. Eucalyptus have been thinned here allowing light to reach the natives in the under story!
Directions: From Hwy-101 northbound, take the Spencer Avenue exit. Continue going straight on Monte Mar Dr. (about 250 feet), then turn left under the freeway. Park here. From Hwy-101 southbound, take the Spencer Ave exit and park on the side of the road or in the circular lot.
