Habitat Restoration Team



Sundays, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM

Help restore and monitor critical natural areas from the Marin Headlands to Bolinas Ridge. The Habitat Restoration Team (HRT), established in 1988, engages community members in the management and enhancement of the Golden Gate National Parks. Volunteers and staff meet at different scenic locations each week to restore native habitat throughout the park. Come out and explore beautiful areas while assisting in invasive plant removal, outplanting of native plants (winter season), and seed collection.

Individuals and Families: Register for this program. Drop-in individuals are welcome however, our office is closed Friday and Saturday so if you need more information, please contact us in advance.

Groups: Schedule a private program for groups of 5 or more. Contact us if you would like to register a group. Group projects must be confirmed in advance.

Age/Skills/What to Bring

  • Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. With young volunteers, adult chaperones are encouraged.
  • No experience necessary. Training and tools will be provided. Fulfills community service requirements.
  • Bring the appropriate waiver forms (see below). Please wear clothes that can get dirty, long pants, close-toed shoes, layers for changing weather, and rain gear if necessary. Also, bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen.

JULY 11 – REDWOOD CREEK
We will scour the shady cobble stone edges of the creek to remove the fast growing veldt grass and keep the area healthy for native plants, stream processes, and spawning salmon.
Meeting Location: Meet at the Annex Parking lot on Muir Woods Road.
Directions: From Hwy North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow to Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) west following the signs to Muir woods. Turn right onto Panoramic Hwy, go north 1 mile and turn left into Muir Woods Road. Proceed downhill. Pass the main entrance into the woods and make the next right into the Annex parking lot.

JULY 18 – CAPEHART QUARRY: STABLES & FORT BARRY, Marin Headlands
Pick your favorite place, its broom for breakfast, lunch, and dessert today! We will clear seed producing plants and keep them from setting back the great progress made in protecting mission blue butterfly habitat during the last 15 years!
Meeting Location: Meet at the intersection of Bunker and McCullough Road.
Directions from Marin: Head south on Hwy-101 to the second Sausalito Exit before the Golden Gate Bridge. Make a right at the off-ramp and go under the overpass. Take the first left to the Marin Headlands and continue through the 5-minute tunnel onto Bunker Road. Park at the intersection of Bunker and McCullough.
Directions from San Francisco: Head north on Hwy-101 across the Golden Gate Bridge and take the Alexander Avenue Exit. Take the first left to the Marin Headlands and continue through the 5-minute tunnel onto Bunker Road. Park at the intersection of Bunker and McCullough.

JULY 25 – STINSON TERRACE, above Stinson Beach Town
Enjoy panoramic views of the lagoon and ocean while we clear patches of broom and dead spurge to open up areas for replanting next winter! 
Meeting Location: Meet at Avenida Farrallone above Stinson town.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) to Stinson Beach town. Turn right at the stop sign onto Calle Del Mar. Turn right on Buena Vista Avenue (one-way). Turn left onto Laurel Avenue (one-way). Turn left onto Belvedere. Turn right onto Avenida Farralone and continue to the end. Meet at the park gate at the end of a short cul-de-sac.

AUGUST  1 – WHITE GATE AND DIPSEA KNOLL, Stinson Beach Region
We will be doing a big hike out to the coastal bluffs to remove invading Helichrysum shrubs and broom from our finest coastal prairies overlooking the ocean.
Meeting Location: Meet on Panormaic Hwy at the Dipsea trailhead at White Gate.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 3.4 miles. Veer to the right onto Panoramic Highway going towards Muir Woods. Stay on Panoramic Highway and continue around the mountain. After 4 miles you will pass the Pan Toll Ranger Station and proceed downhill. Continuing downhill the woods will give way to the views. Meet at the Dipsea trail crossing where it heads out onto the knoll towards Stinson. There is a gate on either side of the highway at the Dipsea Trailhead.

AUGUST 8 – RODEO VALLEY, Marin Headlands
Jubata grass is our target today! We’ll rove the outer bluffs to remove small patches of ice plant, jubata grass and other exotics. We might have some cape-ivy and Helichrysum as dessert!
Meeting Location: Meet at the surfers parking lot at Rodeo Beach at the coastal trail gate.
Directions from Marin: From Hwy-101 South, take the second Sausalito Exit before the Golden Gate Bridge. Make a right at the stop sign and go under the overpass. Continue for about 0.1 miles down the hill and take the first left at Bunker Road. Continue through the 5 minute tunnel and follow Bunker Road for 2.9 miles. Park at the far west end of the beach parking lot.

AUGUST 15 – STINSON GULCH, Bolinas Ridge
We continue our goal of improving flood plain habitat for all wildlife including endangered Steelhead fish. Today we will pull broom and check up on cape-ivy. Quince and apples may be ripe for picking!
Meeting Location: Meet at Willow Camp Trailhead.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/ Stinson Beach/ Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) through Stinson Beach town and continue 1.5 miles north with Bolinas Lagoon on your left. Right before you come to the Stinson schoolhouse, look for the Stinson Gulch trailhead to your right and turn into the road.

AUGUST 22 – HOMESTEAD VALLEY, Mount Tamalpais
A lovely ridge top with panoramic views, we’ll rove some of the finest prairies looking for cotoneaster and brooms to pull. We have made great progress in rolling back the broom, cape ivy, pine, and cotoneaster invasion in this spectacular area!
Meeting Location:  At cypress grove near Ranch Gate on Panoramic Hwy.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 3.4 miles. Veer to the right onto Panoramic Highway going towards Muir Woods. Continue for 0.2 miles and park in the long turnout under the cypress trees on your right.

AUGUST 29 – REDWOOD CREEK, Frank’s Valley Horse Camp
We will pull French broom, cape-ivy, and veldt grass under the dappled canopy of alder and willow trees to protect and restore endangered coho salmon and steelhead trout spawning habitat.
Meeting Location: Meet at Frank's Valley Horse Camp on Muir Woods Road.
Directions: From Hwy 101 North or South, take Hwy 1/Stinson Beach exit. Follow Hwy 1 west for 5.7 miles to Muir Woods Road and drive 3/4 of a mile to the Frank Valley Group Horse Camp gate.

SEPTEMBER 5 – LABOR DAY HOLIDAY!
No work scheduled for today.

SEPTEMBER 12 – COYOTE RIDGE, Tennessee Valley
We’ll rove the beautiful grasslands and scrub forests above Tennessee Valley. Come pull or cut large scotch broom today! Roving for outlier plants is also needed. Targets today are removing broom, Himalayan blackberry, cotoneaster, and other invasive plants. 
Meeting Location: Meet at the end of Countyview Road.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 0.5 miles and turn left at Tennessee Valley Road. Continue for 0.4 miles and turn right on Enterprise Concourse. Go straight through the next intersection and continue ahead up the steep hill to where the road (now called Countyview Drive) dead-ends at a chain link gate. Park at the dead-end near the gate.

SEPTEMBER 19 – TAM FIRE SITE at Coyote Creek
Help restore 12 acres of a former eucalyptus grove into a native woodland plant community. We’ll rove the slopes to nab both the large and small broom and eucalyptus trees, as well as collect native seed.
Meeting Location: Meet at Eastwood Park.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) past 7-11 and bear left onto Northern Avenue. Turn left at the T-intersection and continue on Northern Avenue which veers left at the Y. Turn right on Eastwood Way past the tennis courts and park. Look for the steep gravel road to the park gate.

SEPTEMBER  26 – MARINCELLO TRAIL, Marin Headlands
We’ll caravan to the top of the ridge where we’ll cut and saw away the Portuguese broom and small pines from this grand entrance to a city in the Headlands that was never built! Citizen action continues!
Meeting Location: Meet at Tennessee Valley parking lot.
Directions: From Hwy-101 North or South, take the Mill Valley/Stinson Beach/Hwy-1 Exit. Follow Hwy-1 (Shoreline Hwy) for 0.5 miles and turn left onto Tennessee Valley Road. Continue for 1.6 miles to the parking lot at the end of the road.
