2007 Community Heroes

Four groups and individuals were presented the 2007 Crissy Field Center Community Hero Award: Adopt-An-Alleyway, Community Alliance Project, Edward Arias, and the Quesada Gardens Initiative

Whatever their approach, methodology, or position, they all fit one very important criterion: their work has made a positive impact on the community and has inspired others to get involved and make a difference.

Adopt-An-Alleyway

Chinatown's alleyways are the only truly open space in this San Francisco neighborhood, but they were once left to fill with trash and debris. That is until local teens had enough of the unsafe conditions, and began Adopt-An-Alleyway to regularly monitor the state of the alleys, lead clean up efforts, and remove graffitti to keep Chinatown's alleys clean and accessible to residents and visitors alike. Community Alliance Project

For years, the Community Alliance Project has worked to reverse the dirty and unsafe conditions on Capp Street in San Francisco's Mission District. Against all odds, they brought tentants, property owners, business owners, and homeless residents together to transform lives and work toward safer and healthier streets. Edward Arias

As a teacher at Cesar Chavez Elementarty School in San Francisco, Eddie Arias was fed up with the fact that students and parents had to pass by overgrown garden beds filled with trash each day on the way to school. With the help of the schoolchildren and support from the community, he has reclaimed the garden by turning it into a "green oasis" for fresh fruits and vegetables as well as a teaching tool for language, science, and leadership. Quesada Gardens Initiative

The Quesada Gardens Initiative began with two concerned residents who started weeding, diging, and planting a median strip in their Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood- an area that was riddled by drug dealing and violent crime. The couple started a queit revolution to take back their streets as once-isolated neighbors took notice of their work and began to feel a sense of ownership and community.
