Park Stewardship at Mori Point
Mori Point is a prime example of a site where threatened and endangered species have been affected by human disturbance. Prior to the National Park Service’s acquisition of the land in 2004, a history of intensive recreation had caused a large network of informal trails that eroded the landscape and altered its hydrology.
In response to the problem of encroaching trails and related patterns of erosion, and with the site’s two endagered species in mind, the Parks Conservancy and National Park Service worked to construct a well-defined trail to guide visitors toward favorite destination spots and away from disturbed areas, restoration areas, and sensitive habitats.
Today, the Park Stewardship program continues to engage thousands of students and volunteers in the long term care and protection of Mori Point. Together with its participants, Park Stewardship plants thousands of native wetland and upland plants, removes countless invasive species, monitors endangered species, all in the effort to restore this spectacular resource.
What’s That Big Patch on the Hill?
Look on the hillside and you may notice
what appears to be a lunar landscape with
mysterious mounds throughout. These
mounds are piles of decomposing Cape ivy
covered in tarps and fiber netting. Left
unchecked, this ivy will smother other plants
that wildlife depends upon. Cape ivy can
sprout from the smallest bit of stem, making
it necessary to pull, rake, and cover all the
plant pieces in order to prevent reinfestation. Although the newly-eradicated Cape ivy patch leaves a temporary unsightly scar on the hillside, native vegetation will grow back and take over within just a few short seasons.
