The National Park Service, in partnership with the Parks Conservancy, will carry out prescribed burns in the Marin Headlands west of Highway 1 and at Milagra Ridge near Pacifica between August and September 2010.
In the Headlands, large-scale burns will be applied to an infestation of invasive, non-native grasses, and small “burn boxes” will be used at both sites to restore endangered mission blue butterfly habitat.
These prescribed burns are being conducted by the highly trained professionals of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area's Fire Management Program. They will only take place if weather conditions allow for safe burning and good smoke dispersion. Despite these precautions, there may be some smoke in the area and temporary closures along certain trails while the prescribed fires are underway.
Because Fire Program staff must wait for optimal weather conditions, an exact date cannot be selected very far in advance. Please check back here for updates.
