Project Description
Lands End—attracting more than 1 million visitors each year to its spectacular coastline—is unique for its rocky shores, unparalleled views, close proximity to a large residential neighborhood, and easy access by public transportation. The trails offer breathtaking 30-mile views stretching from the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands and Point Reyes to the Farallon Islands and Pacific Ocean. Closer to shore, the remnants from shipwrecks testify to the rugged nature of the coastline.
With generous philanthropic support from the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund and the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, we are pleased to launch phase two of improvements at Lands End. The Goldman Fund and Goldsmith Foundation were lead supporters of the recently completed work along the trails, scenic overlooks, improvements to the forest health, and natural resource restoration work. Our deep gratitude goes to these lead funders and the members of the Parks Conservancy for their support of work at Lands End.
2010 Actions
The recent major gift from the Goldman Fund will enhance the following projects and anchor the work already accomplished on this site:
- Visitor center at the Lands End Trailhead at Merrie Way with informational displays describing the area’s rich cultural and natural history. The facility, to be called Lands End Lookout, will allow locals and visitors to enjoy an indoor space that will complement the dramatic outdoor restoration work already completed.
- Improve the USS San Francisco Memorial parking area and overlook and restore surrounding native habitat at the end of Camino del Mar, above the Coastal Trail on the Pacific.
- Restore and improve the Eagle’s Point Trailhead and Overlook that will create an accessible trail from Eagle’s Point at the edge of the Sea Cliff neighborhood.
- Continue natural and cultural resource stewardship, including ongoing habitat restoration carried out by the Park Stewardship Program.
The goal of the Trails Forever team in the Lands End project is to improve access, increase safety, promote community stewardship and restore native habitat, and bring enjoyment to the thousands of people who visit this wonderful park site.
Parking Lot Closure
The USS San Francisco Memorial parking area will be closed August-December 2010 during construction. The lower Lands End parking lot and Coastal Trail access will remain open. Click here to view the closure and project schedule map.
