Presidio
Presidio

Project Description

Along ridge tops and coastal bluffs, through forests and valleys and within views of natural or historic beauty, the Presidio offers miles of trails and bikeways for people of all ages to explore and enjoy.

The Presidio is a place for all to enjoy, in ways personal and profound. Runners, walkers, hikers, cyclists, birders, picnickers, and beachgoers find a vast playground. With layers of indigenous, Spanish, Mexican, and American histories and stunning views of the bay, ocean, parkland, and city, the Presidio reminds us it is a place of national significance.

The Presidio Trust, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service are working together to create a new trail system to showcase one of America’s great national parks—the Presidio. This partnership—with support from the community—plans to:

  • Build, revitalize, and enhance the 24 miles of Presidio trails, bikeways, and overlooks
  • Create 19 miles of safe, well-marked bikeways throughout the park
  • Complete eight signature overlooks that offer breathtaking vistas of the park and its spectacular surroundings
  • Connect the Presidio to other Golden Gate National Parks sites via four regional trail links
  • Protect the Presidio’s landscapes, including sensitive habitats and historic sites
  • Create new “community trailheads,” permanent information kiosks installed in San Francisco communities to promote healthy recreation and programs in the parks
  • Provide fun trail-based programs for young people, including “Kids on Trails, “Teens on Trails,” and “Urban Trailblazers”
