Bridge over historic batteries

In 2010, the National Park Service, Presidio Trust, and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy began improvements to the Presidio Coastal Trail corridor and adjacent Lincoln Boulevard.

Dedicated bike lanes were created along portions of Lincoln Boulevard in both directions, and Washington Boulevard became a two-way street—two changes bicyclists and motorists had long waited for. A new path, with a hardened, natural surface adjacent to Lincoln Boulevard leads to the new Pacific Overlook. This California Coastal Trail segment is wide enough to accommodate bicyclists and hikers, and stable enough to meet outdoor accessibility guidelines.

A new bicycle/pedestrian bridge over Battery Cranston and Battery Marcus Miller added an outdoor accessible route between the Golden Gate Bridge and the Coastal Trail while protecting these important historic structures.

Project Highlights:

  • New bike lane and multi-use trail along Lincoln Boulevard
  • Non-native, invasive tree and cape ivy removal throughout the coastal bluffs
  • Native plant restoration
  • Replanting Monterey cypress trees within areas designated as historic forest
  • Construction of the Golden Gate and Pacific Overlooks
  • Construction of a bike/pedestrian bridge to connect the Golden Gate Bridge and the Presidio Coastal Trail, while protecting historic batteries
