The Headlands Center for the Arts provides for multidisciplinary works by artists and creative professions from around the world through programs and community events. Located in a rehabilitated historic military site at Fort Barry, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Headlands has been a critical part of the development of creative careers around the world for more than 30 years. In 1972, the National Park Service took over the decommissioned buildings, looking to create arts center in the national parks setting. A decade later, the founding Board of Directors paved the way for the Headlands Center for the Arts, and since has grown into an irreplaceable artistic resource.
