2009 - 2011 | Alcatraz | multimedia
We Players participated in a three year artistic residency on Alcatraz from 2009 to 2011. Many themes that arise in their classic performances were wonderfully manifested in the local history. Isolation within the cells on a small island, justice, the determined fates of the inmates, and redemption were some concepts they felt were connected to the narratives told on their public stages. In their exhibitions, performances of Hamlet and Iphigenia and Other Daughters, and a culminating symposium, We Players displayed and performed artwork that reflected on these topics. Artist books, a variety of vivid images, and the philosophical voices of talented actors and actresses filled the site, broadening the context of the old prison to the artistic thoughts and interpretations of every visitor.
