Golden Gate Maintenance Volunteers at Ocean Beach

Typical Duties & Responsiblities

  • Plan and lead volunteer work sessions on projects including trail maintenance, painting, beach clean-ups, vegetation removal, planting, and weeding
  • Welcome volunteer groups with an interpretive talk and ensure that volunteers work safely
  • Work side-by-side with park maintenance workers and gardeners on projects including trail maintenance, painting, carpentry, irrigation testing and repair, spotting or flagging for chainsaw or heavy equipment operations, constructing post-and-cable fences and other trail structures, and planting and weeding native plant sites
  • Engage with park visitors, informing them of park information and volunteer opportunities
  • Assist with special events such as National Trails Day, Earth Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, and Coastal Cleanup Day
  • Safely operate hand and power tools
  • Organize and maintain inventories of equipment storage areas
  • Clean tools, equipment, and other items used during volunteer programs

Qualifications

  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required
  • An ability and desire to work with people of varying ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, races, genders, sexualities, and viewpoints
  • Willingness to work outdoors in the highly variable conditions of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (ranging from cool and foggy to hot and sunny)
  • Ability to follow directions carefully, but also to work independently and take on a leadership role as needed
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Energetic, flexible, self-motivated, and a sense of humor
  • Bilingual skills are a plus

Work Environment & Physical Conditions

  • Most work is in a field setting
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry, position objects weighing up to 40 pounds

Terms

  • Internship Start: Open year round until positions are filled.
  • Length of Position: 6 months with the option to extent to one year based on performance and need
  • Schedule: 4 full (10 hour) days per week, Tuesday - Friday OR Monday through Thursday schedule
  • Stipend and Housing Options: 
    • Stipend with housing: weekly taxable per diem stipend of $225/week and free housing. Housing is a single occupancy, dormitory style building in the Presidio of San Francisco. Basic accommodations include a furnished private room, shared kitchen and common areas. Interns must sign a housing contract, abide by residential rules, and help maintain the household. Housing does not accommodated partners, family members, or pets.
    • Stipend without housing: Weekly taxable per diem stipend of $375/week without housing. Eligibility for this option is limited, please inquire if interested.
  • Intern must have a Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number to receive stipend
  • Stipend is a taxable event
