The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is a destination for both locals and international visitors with its sweeping vistas, immense biological diversity, and unique cultural resources. With over 17 million visitors annually and over 80,000 acres of land, the GGNRA is the largest urban national park in the country.

The mission of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s Facilities Management Division is to maintain the park’s buildings and landscaped areas for the use and enjoyment of park staff and visitors. Facilities management involves many different activities carried out by staff and volunteers including maintaining roads and trails, planting native plants, vegetation management, maintaining an extensive irrigation system, and preserving native and historic landscapes. The Maintenance Division Volunteers-In-Parks Program engages the community in order to develop a sense of ownership and civic pride in our parks and foster protection of our cultural and natural resources.

We are looking for a motivated and dynamic individual to assist in a variety of duties in the Maintenance Division. This is a highly flexible position that will assist three different crews based out of the beautiful Marin Headlands. The primary duties will be to assist the Housing Manager with the daily needs of housing in historic Fort Cronkhite and Capehart. The position will also provide field and administrative support to the Roads and Volunteer-In-Parks program crews.
Most importantly, you will be a part of a diverse team working with NPS staff, interns, and volunteers in helping to maintain housing units, historical structures, and landscapes of the national park.

Typical Duties & Responsiblities

  • Support the Housing Manager and Residence Coordinators with a variety of tasks to help maintain and improve park housing;
  • Welcome and provide guidance for new tenants.
  • Prepare and deliver new tenant paperwork packets, organize and update housing paperwork.
  • Create and maintain inventories of furnishings and supplies, research products and develop purchase lists.
  • Check housing to ensure units are clean, stocked, and prepared for new occupancy. Conduct monthly inspections of temporary units.
  • Assist maintenance with refreshing housing units, removing abandoned property, and general grounds upkeep (mowing, vegetation removal, etc.).
  • Submit needed maintenance work orders and make service appointments.
Work alongside the Maintenance Roads and Grounds crews;
  • Assist with landscaping projects throughout the Marin Headlands including operation of a mower, string trimmer, and hand tools.
  • Perform research for equipment purchasing and other basic administrative tasks as needed.
Assist Volunteer Coordinator with facilitation of volunteer work projects and special events;
  • Provide leadership during volunteer work projects, work alongside volunteers to promote a sense of accomplishment and monitor safety. Projects include beach clean-ups, painting, landscaping, etc.
  • Participate in special events such as California Coastal Clean-up, Earth Day, and One Tam initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational, communication, and computer skills.
  • Experience working with people of varying backgrounds and ages and providing quality customer service.
  • Capable of following directions, working independently, resolving problems, and taking on a leadership role.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office and Google Drive programs to organize, prepare, and present information.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record and ability to safely drive a variety of vehicles including a hybrid sedan and large pick-up trucks with a loaded bed.
  • Reliable transportation to the Marin Headlands.
  • Completed background check and Government PIV card preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Conditions

  • Ability to travel over uneven terrain and to lift, carry, and position objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to safely perform basic manual labor including mowing, trimming, cleaning, loading/unloading vehicles, and moving furniture.
  • Enjoy working in both an office setting and outside in various weather conditions while maintaining a positive attitude.

Terms

 

  • Desired Start Date: July 23, 2019 (flexible).
  • Work full-time 5 days/week if in housing. Part-time OK if not in housing, 3-4 days a week.
  • This is a 3-6 month position with a possible extension up to a year.
  • Background check required if not already completed.
