California is home to plants and animals that are found nowhere else on Earth. In 2018, the governor declared September 7th as California Biodiversity Day and launched the California Biodiversity Initiative to bring all Californians together in protecting and celebrating the future of this global biodiversity hotspot. 

Join the celebration of California Biodiversity Day and participate in a unique bioblitz focused on nocturnal animals at Samuel P. Taylor State Park. A bioblitz is a period of biological surveying in an attempt to record the biodiversity of an area. Bioblitz activities will include bat acoustic detection and observation, moth lighting, and glowing scorpions. We will photograph, record, and identify the species we see using iNaturalist with the goal of improving our inventory of nocturnal animals and our understanding of the forest food web. Hone your naturalist and photography skills, learn to use the iNaturalist app, and become our scientific collaborator for an evening. 

We will teach you everything you need to know for a safe, fun evening in the field. All ages are welcome. Participants under 18 will need signed permission forms. Participants under the age of 16 will need a parent or guardian present.
