2020 MLK Day of Service

Volunteer in the Golden Gate National Parks and help grow and restore these spectacular parklands. It’s fun, it’s healthy, and it makes a difference—the perfect way to pitch in on a momentous day, launching a new year in our national parks. Bring the whole family and rally your friends!

This is a rain or shine event. Please dress appropriately!

Marin

(FULL) Rocky Graham Park: Tree Planting & Habitat Restoration | Register > >
Join us this Martin Luther King Jr. Day to help restore mission blue butterfly habitat and provide some TLC for the historic fruit orchard trees near the trailhead! We will be planting one more fruit tree and removing French Broom to clear the views to Marin City and Sausalito. We will be working rain or shine.
Time: 8 am–9:45 am
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Stinson Beach: Beach Cleanup | Register > >
Enjoy a day at the beach while helping to care for our beautiful coastline in Marin!
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Muir Beach: Habitat Restoration | Register > >
Join us this Martin Luther King Jr. Day to help restore critical habitat for the coho salmon and other wildlife through a planting and weeding project. We will be working rain or shine.
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Muir Woods: Trail Maintenance | Register > >
Help prolong the life of the Muir Woods Boardwalk! We will be removing dirt, duff, and debris from between the spaces of the redwood deck boards, a process known as "deck flossing".
Time: 9 am–Noon
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

 

San Mateo

Mori Point: Habitat Restoration | Register > >
Join us this Martin Luther King Jr. Day to help restore habitat for the endangered California Red Legged Frog and the elusive and shy San Francisco Garter Snake. Our planting activity will happen rain or shine! 
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, ages 8 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

 

San Francisco

Fort Mason: Historic Landscape Maintenance | Register > >
Join National Park Service gardeners at Fort Mason to help with a variety of projects including vegetation removal and pruning at Black Point Battery, caring for native plants in the gardens of the Great Meadow, and sprucing up the site by removing litter. 
Time: 9 am-Noon
Age requirement: Ages 10 and up. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Black Point Historic Gardens at Fort Mason: Gardening | Register > >
Help restore scenic garden paths recently freed from decades of overgrowth at Black Point. Thought of as the sister garden to the gardens of Alcatraz, Black Point is a spectacular park site tucked away above the bustling San Francisco waterfront. Projects include weeding, pruning, and uncovering buried walkways.
Time: 9 am-Noon
Age requirement: Ages 12 and up. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Fort Funston: Habitat Restoration | Register > >
Help plant native seedlings in rare dune habitat, weed out invasive species and create a natural fence!
Time: 10am-1pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers ages 8 and up are welcome for the habitat restoration project. Ages 14 and up for the trail project. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Ocean Beach: Historic Landscape Preservation at Stairwell 24 | Register > >
Join us at Ocean Beach on MLK Day for a morning of service. Help beautify and protect the historic Ocean Beach esplanade and O'Shaughnessy seawall! Projects may include painting, weeding, planting, or sand removal.
Time: 10am-1pm
Age requirement: Ages 14 and up. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Presidio: Habitat Restoration | Register > >
Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by taking care of the Presidio! This event features ecological restoration and landscape stewardship.
Time: 9 am–Noon
Age requirement: Space is limited. Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

(FULL) Ocean Beach: Beach Cleanup at Stairwell # 17 | Register > >
Enjoy a day at the beach while helping to care for our beautiful coastline. This project will focus on picking up man-made debris and other litter to enhance visitor experience and protect local endangered species such as the Western Snowy Plover. 
Time: 10 am–Noon
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Age, Skills, What to Bring:

  • Age requirement varies by project. Read our Youth Policy Guidelines (PDF) for youth under the age of 15.

  • Bring your completed Volunteer Agreement Form (PDF). Volunteers under the age of 18 must have the parent/guardian approval section signed.

  • Wear clothes that can get dirty. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Bring layers for changing weather and rain gear if necessary.

  • Bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen.

  • No experience necessary. Training and tools will be provided. Fulfills community service requirements.
