Tipi on Alcatraz with Golden Gate Bridge in background

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Alcatraz Occupation, poet and scholar Dean Rader will lead an interactive presentation on the occupation. Rader is the author of the award-winning book, Engaged Resistance: American Indian Art, Literature, and Film from Alcatraz to the NMAI, which explores the concept of "aesthetic activism" that, as Rader demonstrates, began during the Alcatraz occupation. In this presentation, Rader will talk about and show examples of the art, poetry, and other documents produced during the occupation that he believes, set the stage for important works of Native American painting, public art, poetry, fiction, essays, and film. Part of his presentation will include some rarely seen photographs and artwork.

This event is part of the 2nd Saturday, Cultural Programs taking place on Alcatraz for the next 19 months in commemoration of the All Tribes Occupation on Alcatraz in 1969.
