Celebrate Earth Day and its 50th anniversary by joining one of the many volunteer projects in the Golden Gate National Parks. From beach cleanups to trail maintenance, there is something for everyone. Bring yourself, your friends, and family! 

This is a rain or shine event. Please dress appropriately. Below is the full list of projects available.

Marin

Battery Wallace in the Marin Headlands: Habitat Restoration
Date: Saturday, April 18

Help restore critical natural areas and protect endangered species through various mulching activities along trails. 
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Stinson Beach: Restore and Create
Date: Saturday, April 18

Enjoy a day at the beach while helping to care for our beautiful coastline in Marin and creating temporary art with nature with Artist Zach Pine.
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

San Francisco

Black Point Historic Gardens: Gardening and Trail Stewardship
Date: Saturday, April 18 (
Register>>) and Saturday, April 21 (Register>>)
Discover the historic gardens and pathways of Black Point in Fort Mason through gardening and trail projects. 
Time: 9 am–12 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 14 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Lands End/West Fort Miley: Landscaping and Site Maintenance
Date: Saturday, April 18

Unearth historic Battery Chester!  The park team will focus on maintaining and painting historic structures in Fort Miley. 
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 14and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

East Beach at Crissy Field: Landscaping and Site Maintenance
Date: Saturday, April 18

Join the Park maintenance team for a day at the beach while we remove sand from the parking lot and take care of native planter beds.
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 14and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Stilwell Hall at Crissy Field: Landscaping and Site Maintenance
Date: Saturday, April 18
Join the Park maintenenace team for litter removal and weeding of invasive species around the historic Stilwell Hall! 
Time: 9 am–12 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 14 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Fort Funston: Native Plant Nursery
Date: Saturday, April 18

Join our program and grow with us! Volunteers will help with a variety of activities including transplanting, pruning, weeding, and washing of pots for native pants.
Time: 9:30 am–12:30 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Ocean Beach: Beach Cleanup at Stairwell #17
Date: Saturday, April 18

Help make the San Francisco coast safer for wildlife and visitors by cleaning up Ocean Beach. 
Time: 10 am–12 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Lands End: Holi in the Parks and Habitat Restoration
Date: Saturday, April 18

With the colors of the spring wildflowers come the colors of the South Asian festival of Holi! Please join us for a morning of habitat restoration, fun outdoor activities, dancing, and delicious Indian food.
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

El Polin Spring at the Presidio: Meditation in the Parks - An Opening
Date: Saturday, April 14

We invite you to join us for a quiet, peaceful and meditative walk through the forests in the Presidio. Let's experience the beauty and magic of nature in this part of the city, and find ways for calm and balance within and around us. 
Time: 1 pm–4 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Age, Skills, What to Bring:

  • Age requirement varies by project. Read our Youth Policy Guidelines (PDF) for youth under the age of 15.

  • Bring your completed Volunteer Agreement Form (PDF). Volunteers under the age of 18 must have the parent/guardian approval section signed.

  • Wear clothes that can get dirty. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Bring layers for changing weather and rain gear if necessary.

  • Bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen.

  • No experience necessary. Training and tools will be provided. Fulfills community service requirements.
