Pollution Palooza: Good, Clean Fun!

Pollution Palooza: Good, Clean Fun!

From Park E-ventures, May 2014

The Inspiring Young Emerging Leaders (I-YEL) are a diverse group of high school youth committed to raising awareness about environmental and social issues. Pollution Palooza, a grand obstacle course hosted by I-YEL, invites families and youth to take action against pollution through a series of fun physical challenges at Crissy Field Center on May 10 (10 am–3 pm). It is the I-YEL interns’ goal to gather peoples of all ages and backgrounds, who have the spirit and voice to stand up and spread awareness of the silent consequences caused by pollution.

Pollution Palooza is an all-ages interactive course, filled with activities that test mind and body, while highlighting issues related to various forms of air, light, visual, and noise pollution. I-YEL also will construct a Pollution Pavilion, where participants will learn from exhibitors about the harmful effects of pollution, and how to take part in easy, everyday solutions.

Races will be held at multiple times during the day. Pre-registration and obstacle course waivers are available for both youth and adults. Prizes will be raffled off throughout the day from businesses such as The Sports Basement and Big 5 Sporting Goods.

The event is free for all participants, but donations are welcomed. Registration, waiver forms, and more information available at the Pollution Palooza Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/594439010640288/

In preparation for the event I-YEL youth have spent their Saturdays planning logistics to ensure the day will run as smooth as possible. A video has been crafted to promote the event (see it here: https://vimeo.com/91760594) and I-YEL youth will be documenting the entire project—from deciding the topic and building the event to hosting the actual race.

The Inspiring Young Emerging Leaders (I-YEL) program of the Crissy Field Center is a high school program initiated, designed, and coordinated by youth. Youth receive support and training in planning and implementing projects that create positive change in our communities. Learn more at: http://www.parksconservancy.org/learn/youth/leadership/iyel/.
