Crissy Field Center facilitates outdoor environmental day camps that provide children with meaningful experiences in the Golden Gate National Parks and beyond. Children ages 6 to 11 can enroll in camps where they learn about what makes a thriving park, healthy community, and a just society. Participants build lasting memories, experience self-discovery, forge friendships, and learn about their surroundings through hands-on science experiments, multi-media projects, and outdoor excursions.

Presidio Trekkers (10 days), Grades: Rising 2nd - Rising 3rd

The Presidio is a place of rich natural and cultural history. In this playful and creative inquiry-based outdoor camp, campers learn to develop their observational and collaborative skills. Campers also work together to address problems relevant to themselves and to the parks. Participants go on daily excursions into different areas of the Presidio, meeting Park Rangers and exploring the park’s biodiversity along the way. Register

Junior Rangers (10 days), Grades: Rising 4th - Rising 5th

From the infamous island of Alcatraz to the peaceful forest of Muir Woods, there’s an adventure around every corner! Participants visit several park sites within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to learn the ranger mindset of public service through the following themes: Learn, Explore, and Protect. Campers then reflect on how to apply this mindset to life at home. Junior Rangers spend one night sleeping under the stars at Rob Hill Campground, and they work on a special presentation for the closing ceremony, where they also receive official badges! Register

Urban Backpackers (4 days), Grades: Rising 6th - Rising 7th

This challenging new camp provides your adventure-seeking camper with an exciting wilderness backpacking experience to strengthen their connection to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. All campers will walk 3-5 miles per day while carrying a 10-15 pound backpack. Campers learn and practice Leave No Trace principles while they spend two nights backpacking: the first night at Rob Hill Campground, and then hiking over the Golden Gate Bridge to spend the second night at Kirby Cove Campground. Urban Backpackers are provided with tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and all meals during their journey. Register

NATURE MATTERS

“Summer camps at Crissy Field Center taught my children how to love and appreciate nature. They explored our beautiful coastline and parks close to home and learned how important it is to take care of it. I love that it has opened their eyes and senses to their surroundings as nature conservators.“ –Lisa Lee Sosa, parent of Estrella and Sotero, campers for the last three summers.

FUTURE PLANS

The Crissy Field Center has begun working with community-based organizations in need of tuition-free summer programming focused on outdoor experiential environmental education. Community Partner Camp offers a specific experience rather than a generalist form of camp, allowing us to focus on deeper relationships with individual participants and the group as a whole. SOMEWHERE NEW EVERYDAY

“As a parent I am very happy John was able to participate in the Presidio Trekkers program. I greatly value outdoor education, and felt this program helped my child become more appreciative of parks, both local and national. John said his favorite thing about camp was ‘going to somewhere new every day.’ He also said, ‘I really like hiking with the Trekkers.’ I thought that was awesome. John thinks parks are important because ‘they are public places. They’re for everyone to enjoy. Nobody should ever think they’re not public.’ I was moved that he was able to come up with these answers. I feel he really walked away from the program more aware of park importance, and his ownership of them. We may have a future park steward in the making. We both look forward to next year’s programming as he would like to move on to Junior Ranger! Thank you for an awesome experience!” –Juan Burciaga, parent of John, age 8, a participant in Presidio Trekkers

  • Green Business certification, with an active composting and recycling program
  • Use of recycled materials and program supplies, as well as green janitorial and cleaning product

Camp Philosophy

We seek to provide children in-depth experiences in our urban environment and local national park. Through a rich combination of outdoor investigation, field outings, and fun hands-on projects, campers learn about important ecological concepts and issues while in a community-building, collaborative setting.

We believe that children learn best when they feel safe and happy and we take great care to ensure the safety of every camper. Bullying, discrimination, or any action that jeopardizes the physical or emotional well-being of campers is strictly not tolerated.

Staff

We believe that outstanding youth and families deserve outstanding service. Summer camp educators are highly qualified, fully screened, extensively trained, and are first-aid and CPR-certified. Together we work hard to provide you and your child with the safest and most attentive service possible. A 6:1 youth to adult ratio certainly makes things easier.
