MARIN HEADLANDS NURSERY

Marin Headlands Nursery

In its beautiful setting at Fort Cronkhite above Rodeo Lagoon, the Marin Headlands Nursery collects native plant seed from the Fort Baker and Rodeo watersheds to grow for habitat restoration projects in those areas of the park. It also supports the propagation of historic species for Alcatraz Garden restoration.

The Headlands Nursery staff and volunteers produce from 35,000–40,000 plants each year for projects

The nursery also partners with the Headlands Institute by providing hands-on educational programs for their students along with hosting many field trips for middle and high school students.

Marin Headlands Nursery Projects

Marin Headlands Nursery has collected seed and grown plants for many programs and projects throughout the parks. Since the Parks Conservancy built this nursery in 1997, it has grown over 190,000 plants for these and other projects.

Mission Blue Butterfly on Milagra Ridge
Milagra Ridge
Milagra Ridge is habitat for the endangered Mission blue butterfly. The Marin Headlands Nursery has grown many coastal grassland plants particularly lupine and phacelia, plants on which the Mission blue depends.
Coastal Trail
Coastal Trail
A portion of this magnificent trail was rerouted by the National Park Service to prevent erosion. The old trail was revegetated and the new sections were enhanced.
Crissy Field Volunteers
Crissy Dunes, Salt Marsh, and Swale
As part of the amazing transformation of Crissy Field, 20 acres of dunes and 18 acres of tidal lagoon were restored. A small area of dune swale was also created. The dune swale is now a rare plant community along the coast.
Oakwood Valley
Oakwood Valley
Oakwood Valley—within Tennessee Valley—is the site of improved habitat for the endangered Mission blue butterfly and an expanded oak woodland. More animals use oak woodlands than any other plant community in California.
Fort Baker
Fort Baker
At Fort Baker, project managers and supporters are enhancing and expanding habitat for the endangered Mission blue butterfly.
