Golden Gate Bridge reflecting in Quartermaster Reach saltwater marsh

Learn about the story of Quartermaster Reach; a former military landfill turned into a thriving seven-acre tidal marsh teeming with wildlife along the Presidio’s northern shoreline near Crissy Field. Following the removal of the Army-era landfill, an 850-foot length of stream was brought back to the surface. Box culverts were then installed beneath Mason Street at Crissy Marsh to allow the fresh water of the stream to flow into the saltwater marsh and San Francisco Bay and create a habitat for fish, crabs, oysters, and birds. Wildlife and Biological Technicians David Harelson and Moses Alvarez of the Presidio Trust will lead a fascinating tour of the newly restored saltmarsh and the wide variety of plant and animal species that now call the area their home. We will cover, nudibranchs, oyster restoration, fish, birds, and the many native plant species in the site, among other things! They'll also discuss some of the successes/challenges of managing Quartermaster Reach in the last couple of years as well as the mission to bolster biodiversity in the parks and engage community.
