INSPIRED BY MUIR WOODS: NELSON STUBBINS

Silver Lupine Circle member and NPS Volunteer, Nelson Stubbins

Upon his retirement several years ago, Nelson was called back to the forest. An avid Sierra backpacker in his younger days and a regular hiker of Bay Area trails, he one day found himself taking a walk at Muir Woods with Ranger Lucy Scott and filling out a volunteer application. In short order, Nelson was inspired to initiate and lead bi-weekly Sunday sunrise walks at Muir Woods and share his knowledge, philosophy and awe with others in this spectacular redwood grove. Recently, Nelson meaningfully extended his commitment to this special area by naming Muir Woods National Monument and One Tam as beneficiaries of a bequest intention. For Nelson, this gesture was as natural as the place where he finds “a redwood forest as interesting as it is beautiful.”
