This year, the I-YEL Identity Project was inspired by the seminal work author Octavia E. Butler. Butler believed that “all that you touch you change, [and] all that you change changes you.” The project this year therefore sought to explore the interconnection between our identity as individuals and our community, as well as our community’s role in shaping it. To do this, students were to create zines reflecting on relationships that have significantly influenced their worldview. The project brought forth the following ideas:
At the end of the project, each student had a zine and interview to share with the broader group, illuminating the significance of our loved ones in shaping who we’ve become and who we’re becoming.
Who was your identity project about?
My identity project was about how Koby shared how his passions and what gave him a sense of community.
Why did you choose to do your project about this person?
I chose Koby Park because he is someone I look up to and someone who I truly felt connected with. He's someone with wisdom and always have sense of the best responses to say.
What is a characteristic or value that you learned from them that you now embody?
He is a human being and that he has his own struggles. This interview with him helped me learn that everyone has their own things going on, and he shared personal thing I didn’t know about him. This project helped me learn more about him.

Why did you choose to do your project about this person?
She has been close to me since childhood, and I LOVED HER!
What is a characteristic or value that you learned from them that you now embody?
Straightforwardness and speaking up since she is a straightforward honest person

Who was your identity project about?
My project was about one of my old teachers.
Why did you choose to do your project about this person?
I picked him because they gave me hope at one of the worst times of my life.
What is a characteristic or value that you learned from them that you now embody?
I learned from them how to be myself, be confident in myself, always trying and helping others. Some values that I took from him was to always do what you can, ask for help when needed and to help others when as much as you can.

Because I feel comfortable to be vulnerable to.

My identity project was about my mom.
Why did you choose to do your project about this person?
I chose to do my project on my mom because she does a lot for me and she always supports me.
What is a characteristic or value that you learned from them that you now embody?
I learned from my mom that you should go with the flow and to be grateful.
Who was your identity project about?
My older brother Ramesses. He is attending college at Santa Cruz as a business major.
Why did you choose to do your project about this person?
Even though I grew up with him, we have very different lives and how we perceive our childhood is different.

All Marvel, superhero, Lego knowledge is from him.
