The Bay Area Ridge Trail represents a vision for a 550-mile loop of connected trails and pathways along the Bay Area's hills. Almost 400 miles of the trail are complete, including this section in the Presidio. This is one of three regional trails that cross through the Presidio en-route to the Golden Gate Bridge–the San Francisco Bay Trail, Bay Area Ridge Trail, and statewide California Coastal Trail.
Upgrades to this major trail thoroughfare have been implemented in several phases. The first phase, completed in 2005–2006, established a new segment of trail between the Cemetery Overlook and Compton Road. The second phase provided an accessible connection between Rob Hill Campground and the Pacific Overlook and Coastal Trail.
