Join us in the beautiful Alcatraz Gardens for this hands-on workshop to build your own mosaic tile with instructor Kristi Halva. Kristi has been involved with the arts since her days in high school and has recently studied under the direction of Laurel True, a well-known mosaic artist at the Institute of Mosaic Arts in Oakland California.

This day-long course is co-hosted/sponsored by the Conservancy's Alcatraz Gardens program and will begin with a tour of the historic gardens with manager Shelagh Fritz to gain inspiration for you to create your own mosaic. With ideas in mind, Kristi will walk through the steps of creating a beautiful piece of art of your own. Participants will also see the Alcatraz Florilegium on display, a collection of botanical illustrations depicting the plants of Alcatraz.

The ferry ride to Alcatraz, all the supplies and lunch are provided. Participants must wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty--bringing an apron to wear is encouraged, as this is dirty art! This is a 4-5 hour class in the design, development, and creation of a stain glass mosaic. Bring your creative spirit and ideas for your mosaic! The island itself will provide much inspiration; we will be working on a 12x12 inch foam board square, so please keep these dimensions in mind as you plan.

Please plan to check in at Pier 33 (Alcatraz Landing) no later than 8:30 am to take the 8:45 am ferry (map and parking link), class will finish at 2pm, allowing for clean-up time and time to return to the Pier by 3 pm (return ferry schedule here).

Cost: $50

Please dress for the variable weather of the island--bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Please meet at Pier 33 by 8:30 am to depart on the 8:45 am ferry-- those who register for this class DO NOT have to buy a ferry ticket; a ticket, as well as lunch and all the materials you need for the workshop is included in the cost of the workshop.
