Join us for a special Earth Day experience on Alcatraz Island, where history meets nature. Explore the island’s stunning gardens, discover sustainable gardening practices, and participate in a hands-on marine science activity that connects us to the health of San Francisco Bay.

Alcatraz Historic Gardens Open Hours: 10 AM – 3:30 PM

  • Wander through the Rose Terrace and Officers’ Row to see Alcatraz’s unique gardens in full bloom.
  • Learn about composting and water catchment systems in action.
  • Meet Dick Miner, the Worm Man of Alcatraz, and get an inside look at the island’s composting process.
  • Hands-on demo: Learn how to build your own worm bin and start composting at home.

Crabbing On Alcatraz: 3-4:30 PM

  • What can crabs tell us about the health of SF Bay?
  • Go beyond the usual prison and Civil War-era fort tour—help catch and release crabs from the waters around Alcatraz.
  • Learn about the San Francisco Bay ecosystem and how marine life helps us track environmental health.
  • Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate Earth Day with hands-on activities that connect us to nature.
