ID BASICS

Size: length 19 inches; wingspan 40 inches; Redtail size

Key Field Marks: Accipiter-like buteo; crescent-shaped window in outerwing; thin white bands on dark tail

  • Adult: red belly and 2-3 vivid white thin bands on black tail

  • Juvenile: brown speckled belly, dingy-white thin tail bands on brown tail

Flight: flap-glides more than Red-tailed Hawk; quick, swift shallow wing-beats; glides on down-curved wings; soars on flat wings
