Help Preserve a Piece of History at Baker Beach
Dan Friedman
When: Thursday, September 24th, 10am - 1pm. Registration Required.
Where: Baker Beach, Battery Chamberlin
Volunteers will help to maintain the 1904 battery (sweeping and weeding) and then learn about the 118-year old gun. Training with Ranger James, they become part of the "gun crew" which loads the gun, levers it up to firing position, cranks it down and covers it for safekeeping. No actual danger of explosives is involved, but this exercise preserves the gun's status on the National Register of Historic Places! Volunteers 12+ are welcome.
Groups of five or more may require special arrangements and must be confirmed in advance. Visit our Groups volunteer page to learn more.
Volunteers ages 12 and up are welcome. Youth under the age of 15 should be joined by a parent or guardian. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a volunteer agreement form signed by a parent/guardian. Agreement form will be included in confirmation email after registering.
Wear clothes that can get dirty. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Bring layers for changing weather and rain gear if necessary.
Bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen.
No experience necessary. Training and tools will be provided. Fulfills community service requirements.
The Golden Gate National Parks Volunteer Program is a cooperative parkwide effort of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the National Park Service, and the Presidio Trust.
