Learn about wrongful convictions and the fight to exonerate innocent people in this special presentation by the Northern California Innocence Project. The Project is a non-profit program of Santa Clara University School of Law whose mission is to promote a fair, effective, and compassionate criminal legal system and protect the rights of the innocent. Since 2001, they have processed more than ten thousand requests for assistance, investigated hundreds of cases, pursued litigation or collaborative resolution in dozens, and obtained the freedom of 38 wrongfully convicted people who collectively lost nearly 600 years in prison.

Megan Crane is the Legal Director of the Northern California Innocence Project and Santa Clara University Clinical Professor of Law. In this role, Megan leads the Progect's post-conviction innocence litigation efforts, supervises staff attorneys, and teaches in its law clinic. Megan joined from the Roderick & Solange MacArthur Justice Center, and her previous experience includes clinical teaching positions at Washington University School of Law, the University of Missouri School of Law, and Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law where she served as co-director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth.

Throughout her career, Megan has represented wrongfully convicted individuals, people facing capital punishment, and clients in complex civil rights litigation. Megan's work on behalf of the wrongfully convicted began in 2013 when she was an associate at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP and worked with the Project in a pro bono capacity to help exonerate client George Souliotes.

In 2008, Kevin was wrongfully convicted of causing the death of his infant son and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. In January of 2022, Kevin was ordered to be released from prison after 13 years of wrongful incarceration based on the evidence that his son’s death was from natural causes, and because of Kevin’s exemplary prison record.

During his wrongful imprisonment, Kevin participated in and facilitated numerous life improvement courses, organized fundraisers for multiple charities and earned his Associate’s degrees in Science and Business. Now free, Kevin continues to support other freed and exonerated individuals with moral and mental support during their reentry back into society.

Since coming home, Kevin has worked to rebuild his relationship with his daughter and find his footing in his local community and the workforce so he can provide for his family. Today he shares a close-knit home with his fiancé and five children, who stand beside him on the journey he continues to walk. He has spent the last four years in public utilities and has earned one of the highest water certifications available in California. Kevin also continues to support the Innocence Network with public speaking events and guidance to young adults within his community and throughout California and the nation.
