What Is Valkatraz?

"Valkatraz" is a nickname inspired by the Golden State Valkyries, from their visit to Alcatraz Island in August 2026. After members of the team toured the island and the Valkyries and Parks Conservancy shared photos and videos on social media, fans embraced the nickname. The term soon appeared online and in team coverage as a reference to the Valkyries' lockdown defense, drawing a connection between one of the Bay Area's most iconic places and one of its most exciting professional sports teams.

Days later, members of the Golden State Warriors also visited Alcatraz on their own Custom Tour. The visits highlighted the many stories and experiences that make Alcatraz Island a destination unlike any other in the Bay Area.

The Story Behind Valkatraz

Just ask the Golden State Valkyries.

In August, veteran guard Tiffany "Tip" Hayes, a WNBA All-Star and 2024 Sixth Woman of the Year, finally got her wish to bring her teammates to Alcatraz after talking about it for more than a year. Joined by the Parks Conservancy and Alcatraz City Cruises, the team toured the island, took in the views, and the partners shared the experience on social media with "Welcome to Valkatraz."
