ID BASICS

Size: length 16 inches; wingspan 34 inches; raven size 

Key Field Marks: small, chunky buteo; unmarked underwing (no patagial or carpal patches)

  • Adult: one wide whitish tail band (compare to two bands on Redshoulder)

  • Juvenile: gray-brown banded tail

Flight: soaring hawk often kettling with Redtails and Redshoulders; soars on flat wings
