John Muir Laws: Color Theory that Works

Let’s reinvent the wheel in this hands on color mixing workshop. If you learned that red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors you have been sold a bill of goods that is guaranteed to make muddy colors! Learn a better color triad that will help you easily mix the colors you want when you want 'em. You don’t have to take my word for it.This will be a hands on workshop. We will mix watercolor, gouache, and acrylics, and play with colored pencils to make our own hues. You will see for yourself what works.

In this class we will:

  • debunk the red, yellow, blue hoax
  • learn why the split palette system adds an unnecessary layer of confusion to color mixing
  • experiment with the cyan, magenta, yellow triad  for better color mixing. Mix bright vibrant colors  or make dull subdued colors that specifically match target hues
  • take a look at other useful paints for your watercolor palette

What to bring:

  • waterbrush, and rag (sock),
  • your watercolor set (if you have one). If you are able to add these colors to your palette: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Pink, Phthalo Blue (green shade), Hansa Yellow Light.
  • process red, true blue, and canary yellow prismacolor pencils

All ages and ability levels welcome. $20 suggested donation.

For a google map to the meeting location, click here >>(the location is marked by the tree icon; free parking areas are marked by a blue "P".)

The class location is at Building 989 in the Presidio (behind the bathrooms next to the Warming Hut). Building 989 doesn’t actually have a street address (the Presidio can get pretty confusing – most of the buildings don’t have addresses!) It’s at the intersection of Long Avenue and Marine Drive, behind the bathrooms next to the Warming Hut Bookstore and Cafe. On the Google map above of the Warming Hut, building 989 is labeled “Pacific Coast Federation.” If you’re using mapquest or GPS, the best thing would be to go to the Warming Hut at 983 Marine Drive. We will put up a sign at the 989 building entrance and near the parking lot to point you in the right direction.

Please note: Park Academy classes are meant as a special perk for volunteers, members, and employees. If you do not work for the Golden Gate National Parks, are not a member, or have not volunteered with us in the past year, a donation is encouraged. Volunteer or become a member today!
