If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting the iconic Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy from the Star Trek universe, you don’t need to board a Federation Constitution-class starship like the USS Enterprise to see it in real-life. Fort Baker and the Presidio of San Francisco often serve as the scenic inspiration for the legendary headquarters and cadet academy. With stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s easy to see why these former U.S. military bases turned national parks were chosen to represent Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy in the Star Trek TV shows and films.

For fans of the series, visiting these locations might just be like stepping into a holodeck simulation of the Star Trek universe. You might even imagine seeing Starfleet officers like Captain Jean-Luc Picard or Admiral Kathryn Janeway walking the grounds, preparing for their next mission to explore strange new worlds.

Presidio of San Francisco

The Presidio is not just a destination for Star Trek fans since it's often depicted as Starfleet Command—it’s also a place rich in history and natural beauty. The land at the Golden Gate was the traditional territory of the Yelamu, a local tribe of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples of the San Francisco Peninsula. It then served as a military outpost for the Spanish Empire, the Mexican Republic, and the United States Army. Today, it’s a national park site and a National Historic Landmark District, offering stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, Marin Headlands, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Fort Baker

Fort Baker in Marin County is another historic military post that has been transformed into a national park (part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area) through the help of the Parks Conservancy. It's often featured in the Star Trek universe as the site for the Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Headquarters.
