"Inuksuit" Performed by SFJAZZ

Curran White/Parks Conservancy
Inuksuit is presented in partnership by SFJAZZ, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the National Park Service. This event is part of our Art in the Parks and Tunes on Trails program, bringing pop-up music performances to trails across the Golden Gate National Parks.
Inuksuit is an innovative performance created by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning composer John Luther Adams. Adams’ works explore the natural landscapes of North America, with particular focus on Alaskan wilderness and the culture of indigenous populations.
The word Inuksuit is the plural form of the indigenous word inuksuk, used today to describe man-made stone structures used by the Inuit, Iñupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the Arctic region of North America. The word Inuksuk originally means "that which acts in the capacity of a human."
Adams’ Inuksuit is a unique musical experience. The work is designed to be performed outdoors; the performers are placed in different locations across a terrain, in this case, the Coastal Trail at Lands End. Visitors walk the trail and encounter different performers along the way. The resulting sounds become mixed with the sounds of the space: the rustling of leaves, bird songs, or the ocean waves.
Adams describes this interaction of music and space as “sonic geography.” Explore the trails at Lands End, not only by enjoying the coastal views, but by hearing the park sounds in a new way.
This performance will be led by composer Doug Perkins, a founding member of the acclaimed chamber percussion group SЃЌ Percussion. All participating performers are local percussionists, from professional musicians to San Francisco students
This event is free and open to the public.
