The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory's (GGRO) mission is the preservation of California raptors through scientific research, outreach, and community involvement. Each year, we study and monitor the Pacific Raptor Flyway from the Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

We are a Community Science Raptor Research program, and we rely on a team of volunteers to assist us in collecting data. We have two program areas: Hawkwatch and Banding. This year, we will only be recruiting for our Hawkwatch Program. Due to special circumstances, the 2026 banding recruitment will be open by invitation only. This invitation will only be extended to previous GGRO banding apprentices and other program participants in good standing who were placed in waiting status in 2024 and 2025. The Hawkwatch volunteer program requires a 5-month (Aug-Dec) commitment, volunteering a full day every other week.

In this virtual information session, you will learn about each of the GGRO programs and what it entails to become a GGRO volunteer.
