Gateway communities are the front doors of our National Park System, and the Bay Area is fortunate to have many. Mt. Tam is recognized by many as the birthplace of modern mountain biking and has become a cycling epicenter.  

TNT Traysikel made history and worldwide news when it crossed the Golden Gate Bridge earlier this year, reportedly becoming the first Filipino traysikel to cross the famed bridge. 

In our parks, there are two mountain peaks within five aerial miles of the closest GGNRA beach. In just a few hours, you can take in 360-degree mountain-top views of the Bay Area and walk barefoot through the sand at sea level.  

Meet professional ultrarunner and high school teacher YiOu Wang, who enjoys our parks for mega-runs and hikes with students. With every step, she sees the effects of climate change and the chance to inspire young people toward action.

On an early morning, a fresh cohort of volunteers for One Tam’s Marin Wildlife Watch community science program sat around a table in a darkened room, ready to see some animals.

This new 14-acre national park experience includes trails, meadows, play spaces, and overlooks to soak in the 360-degree views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay. Special cultural events and food offerings are being planned, and Presidio Tunnel Tops will be a welcoming destination for people to gather and learn about the natural world.

The western pond turtle hasn’t been observed in the Rodeo Valley Watershed since 1998. This year, the fourth year of a five-year reintroduction plan, biologists reintroduced 20 turtles to Rodeo Valley and 14 to Redwood Creek Watershed.

Thanks in part to the work of Tamalpais Bee Lab volunteers, we now know there are HUNDREDS of different bees on Mt. Tam. As these photos indicate, you never know what amazing, colorful bees you'll see!
