The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy has received a new $5 million grant from the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund to support restoration efforts at Lands End—bringing the Fund’s total support of the Lands End project to $8.6 million. 

Lands End— historic place of steam trains, recreation, and scenic beauty—will unveil its newly rehabilitated Merrie Way overlook, trailhead, and parking area to the public on Saturday, October 18, 2008.

The generous support from the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation will help fulfill a $17 million funding goal to complete a 24-mile system of classic and high-quality trails, bikeways and overlooks in the Presidio—creating a dynamic and enduring new public resource for the residents of San Francisco Bay Area and visitors from around the world.

The Redwood Creek Restoration Project at Muir Beach will continue this summer and fall, making the creek a functional, self-sustaining ecosystem once again by realigning the creek; restoring wetlands, an intermittent tidal lagoon, and dunes; and also creating and maintaining habitat for sustainable populations of the endangered coho salmon and threatened steelhead trout.

The National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy are proud to be organizing a year-long commemoration of Muir Woods’ Centennial Year.

Today, the nonprofit Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, with its public agency partners the Presidio Trust and the National Park Service, announced a $15 million gift from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund to continue the transformation of the Presidio into a great national park for all.
