At every turn of the trail on this wild and rocky northwestern corner of San Francisco, there is another stunning vista. Along the way you'll see hillsides of cypress and wildflowers, views of old shipwrecks, access to the epic ruins of Sutro Baths, pocket beaches, and a new Lookout Visitor Center. You can thank community volunteers who have helped revitalize and restore the native habitat here.

Imagine yourself on the coast of Scotland. At this glorious, rocky bluff off Highway 1 near Stinson Beach you can park and hike down to Red Rock Beach. The Pacific roars, winds stir the chaparral, and if you make reservations far in advance you can spend the night at rustic cabins here.

Discover one of the parks' richest wetlands along the lush coast west of Mt. Tamalpais. Bolinas Lagoon is a 1,100-acre tidal estuary between the eccentric village of Bolinas, Highway 1, and the sandy arc of Stinson Beach. Its pristine, water-snaked marshes are home to a fascinating diversity of bird life.

It's hard to believe such a vast, beautiful, and diverse wilderness is so close to a major metropolitan area. The Marin Headlands is a crown jewel of the Golden Gate National Parks, abounding with places of natural wonder and beauty (Rodeo Valley/Lagoon, Gerbode Valley, Hawk Hill, Tennessee Valley) and remarkable historic sites (Point Bonita Lighthouse, Fort Cronkhite, Nike Missile Site, Battery Townsley).

Windswept, exhilarating, and covered with unique red and green pebbles, this beach is just three miles northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge.

You'll imagine you're in the English countryside while strolling the rolling hills of Bolinas Ridge, a 10.5 mile trail through pastoral farmlands in lovely western Marin. Before you stretches Olema Valley, the San Andreas Rift Zone, and to the north Tomales Bay, the entry to Point Reyes.

Drink in a sweeping view of Tomales Bay from this 259-acre park overlooking grasslands, creeks, and tidelands, out to Point Reyes and the Pacific. A short 0.5-mile hike leads you to a dramatic promontory above the water.

Rich with wildlife habitats, Rodeo Valley winds through the heart of the Marin Headlands and is edged by grassy, wind-swept hillsides. Where it descends to the Pacific, there is a lagoon and shallow wetlands home to shorebirds including egrets and ducks, as well as butterflies and occasional bobcats.

Locals consider China Beach a civic secret, tucked between Lands End and Baker Beach in the Sea Cliff neighborhood west of the Golden Gate.

On the windswept coast south of the City, Milagra Ridge boasts views to the edge of the Pacific horizon. This scrub-covered ridgeline is critical habitat, home to Red-tailed Hawks and the endangered mission blue butterfly. It is the site of intensive restoration by Park Stewardship staff and volunteers.
