Fong Bing Wah, or Wallace B. Fong, was a San Franciscan and Chinese-American engineer with a unique link to the lights of the Golden Gate Bridge. He was also the grandfather of Katherine Toy, our Executive Vice President of Partnerships and Programs.

We can’t go back in time and stop giant redwoods from being cut down. But we can take material from old stumps, grow it in a special medium, and plant a grove of coast redwood saplings with super DNA, right here in the Presidio of San Francisco.
The fall raptor season is upon us, and that means Peak Week is coming quickly. What is Peak Week, you ask? Peak Week is the mini-season of absolute high-count, high-banding days each year at the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory.
What do you call two smiling raptor banders? A pair o’grins! Beaming faces were abundant on Hawk Hill during the fall 2014 migration season, which featured plenty of “celebrity” raptors, a loopy Redtail, a bald eagle flyby, and 300 intrepid Golden Gate Raptor Observatory volunteers.
To commemorate Volunteer Appreciation Day at Golden Gate, multimedia intern Lauren Gee made a video about why volunteers choose to donate their time in the parks. Lauren noticed one thing in common with everyone she interviewed: Undeniable joy as they opened up to her about their volunteer experiences.
Through the magic of StoryWalks, pages from two charming children’s books will be placed on signs along trails at Lands End and Mountain Lake (Presidio) this summer. Learn about this project—and other fun programs in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library.
