"I Am An American: The Nisei Soldier Experience"
"I Am An American: The Nisei Soldier Experience" Exhibit with the National Japanese American Historical Society
-

The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is proud to invite members to explore a new exhibit at Building 640 in the Presidio, also known as the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center, hosted by the National Japanese American Historical Society. Formed in 1981, the NJAHS is dedicated to the collection, preservation, authentic interpretation, and sharing of historical information of the Japanese American experience for the diverse broader national and global community. "I Am An American: The Nisei Soldier Experience" is a new traveling exhibit that tells the storied history of second-generation Americans of Japanese ancestry, known as "Nisei", who demonstrated their loyalty during World War II by enlisting to serve in the U.S. Army. In the exhibit, their service is recounted against the backdrop of fear and racial tension that inspired thousands to volunteer from Hawaii and drove the U.S. government to remove Japanese Americans and people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast to the ten Wartime Relocation Authority (WRA) Incarceration Camps during the war. Join us on Friday, July 17th, from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm to explore the exhibit, on view only until August 31st, 2026.
