Volunteers

October 5–7 was one very busy weekend in San Francisco, with Fleet Week and America’s Cup headlining two of the many, many events going on in the City. Even so, folks involved with both spectacular events still found time to give some TLC to the Golden Gate National Parks.

Teens on Trails is a volunteer program designed uniquely with high school students in mind: our volunteer work days are hosted on school holidays!

Our goal is two-fold: we welcome students to cool park sites where we’ll provide some education, snacks, and good times—and in turn, much-needed work gets accomplished…

To build excitement for National Trails Day on June 2, 2012, we are putting you to the (trail) test. Flex your brain muscles to identify the park and the trail in the photos below and discover what type of trail aficionado (or not!) you are.

Volunteers with Marin’s Park Stewardship team have been gathering together branches and sticks, lashing them together, and dumping them in Redwood Creek. Some strange ritualistic behavior? Or evidence of restoration science at work? Find out by reading on.

For 15 years (as of April 2012), students at Oceana High School have been growing plants on campus for restoration projects in the parks. See what they have accomplished at this sixth Parks Conservancy native plant nursery—and learn how they took the initiative to expand their green oasis.
