‘Tis the season for a 3-hour outdoor adventure "Family HoliDAY" packed with fun, wow and discovery. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the San Francisco Bay Area is a perfect destination for multigenerational families looking to create unforgettable hikes and memories. With most parks just a boat or a bus ride away, and fewer crowds during the winter months, now is the time to enjoy all these urban national parks can offer. Here are a few day-trip and winter getaway ideas near San Francisco filled with food, fun and spectacular scenery.
Presidio Tunnel Tops to Crissy Field to Hot Chocolate:
Start at the Outpost Playground at the base of Presidio Tunnel Tops in San Francisco. Kids 2-12 can climb, slide, dig and crawl in a play area made of natural materials with views of the San Francisco Bay. While you’re there, visit the Field Station, a curiosity lab where kids can use their senses to investigate real things from around the park involving animals, geology and more.
Head across the street to Crissy Field and its waterfront trail for playtime at East Beach. Then head down the Crissy Field Promenade for a sumptuous hot chocolate (or Crissy Mocha for the adults) at the Warming Hut Park Store.
Marin Headlands: Hike, Picnic and Play in Tennessee Valley
Just 10-15 minutes from downtown Mill Valley in Marin County, find the Tennessee Valley Trailhead. From there, the trail is a relatively easy 3.4 mile out-and-back where you might encounter deer, hawks and birds of all kinds. Hike to a secluded cove with stunning rock formations that’s a great place for a picnic. There’s a restroom halfway through the hike. Bring water and supplies, and enjoy one of the most spectacular and accessible beach hikes around.
Stinson Beach: White Sand Walks, Famous Trails, and Baked Goods
Pack up the sand toys, football and frisbee, and head to the miles of white sand at Stinson Beach in Marin County. Everything is at your fingertips. Park at the beach and you’ll hear the surf. Head to the water or toward town for supplies from Parkside or the Stinson Beach Market. There’s a playground for smaller children in town. If you have the energy and time, hike up, up, up, a portion of the famous Dipsea Trail or Matt Davis Trail, both of which are just across Highway 1. Enjoy streams (full in winter!) and changing terrain, from dry to lush, with stunning ocean views.
