Step beneath the canopy and into the quiet magic of the forest. From cool groves of towering redwoods to shady oak woodlands, the forests of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Mt. Tam invite you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature—and each other.

Spending time among trees isn’t just beautiful, it’s restorative. Research shows that being in forests can lower stress, boost mood, improve focus, and even support heart and immune health. The simple act of walking beneath green canopies (sometimes called forest bathing) helps calm the nervous system and encourages a sense of peace and clarity. And on warm Bay Area days, the shade provided by towering redwoods and oaks makes these trails especially refreshing places to wander.

Best of all, these escapes are never far away: with trailheads in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties, the forests of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Mt. Tam are both accessible and timeless.

To ensure these landscapes thrive for generations to come, the Parks Conservancy and our One Tam partners study, preserve, and protect forests throughout the region—with the help of community scientists who gather valuable data. By becoming a Parks Conservancy member, you directly support this vital work.
