On the windswept coast south of the City, Milagra Ridge boasts views to the edge of the Pacific horizon. This scrub-covered ridgeline is critical habitat, home to Red-tailed Hawks and the endangered mission blue butterfly. Milagra Ridge’s proximity to urban development, its limited size, and its rare wildlife make it a unique destination in GGNRA.
Milagra Ridge was the scene of extensive military activity, including coastal lookout stations and gun batteries during World War II and a nuclear-equipped Nike missile site during the Cold War.
In 1993, the Park Stewardship program was formed and Milagra Ridge was officially adopted as a Stewardship site. Today, volunteers and park staff continue to protect and restore this beautiful park site.
On this 90 minute walk, we’ll learn about the pre-history and historic uses of Milagra Ridge, and the extensive restoration efforts that have taken place here.
